Overview
National Center for Plant Gene Research (Beijing)
Supported by the Department of Rural and Social Development of Ministry of Science and Technology, National Centre of Plant Gene Research-Beijing (NCPGR-Beijing) was established in 2004. The focus of the center is to promote the industrialization of transgene plant by improving research capabilities in functional gene and transgene products from a wide variety of plants including rice, wheat, bean and potato.
In order to better implement the major initiative of the national transgenic plant research, National Center for Plant Gene Research – Beijing (NCPGR-Beijing) was set up on March 2004, approved by the Department of Rural and Social Development of Ministry of Science and Technology. NCPGR-Beijing was hosted by the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and all members includes the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Peking University, China Agricultural University and Beijing Weiming Kaituo Agriculture Biotechnology Co., Lt.
In terms of its research faculties, the NCPGR-Beijing has attracted 49 project scientists from the member institutes, who are of great academic attainments and playing leading roles in plant gene research both at home and abroad. Besides the progresses made in its infrastructure, platform construction and talent enrollment, the scientists of the NCPGR-Beijing have published more than 300 papers in high impact journals like Cell, Plant Cell, Plant Physiology and PNAS in the past four years. Significant progress has been made in the area of commercialization of transgenic plants. Biosafety certificates for 19 transgenic plants have been issued by the government. The new transgenic line of H55 which is of leaf rust disease resistance in wheat has been approved for the stage of production trial. H55 is the only transgenic wheat line that has been approved to enter into the last stage- production trial in China. Furthermore, 58 patents have been applied and 26 of them granted to the center. The above achievements made in the original innovation have played a great role in promoting the fundamental and applied research in agro-biotechnology in China.
