• CEPAMS Board Chair Dr. Blake Meyers Visits IGDB in Beijing

    TIME: 28 Jul 2023
Dr. Blake Meyers, Chair of the CEPAMS Governing Board and International Scientific Advisory Committee, visited IGDB in Beijing from 27 July to 28 July 2023, and delivered a lecture on his research.

Dr. Meyers is a principal investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis and a professor at the University of Missouri –Columbia. He is a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society of Plant Biologists. He was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2022.

Dr. Meyers has pioneered the development and application of high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies to make fundamental discoveries about small RNAs and their impact on plant biology. His research has had wide application to crop improvement, including the development of new technologies for breeding hybrid crops.

With over 260 published research articles that have been cited over 39,000 times, Meyers is a prolific scientific author and among the most highly cited plant scientists. Among his many leadership contributions, Dr. Meyers currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for The Plant Cell, a leading journal in the field.

Dr. Meyers gave a talk on secondary siRNA pathways which are key regulators of male reproductive development in plants. During his talk, he introduced that flowering plants have two major classes of reproductive, male-enriched small RNAs, which are important before and during meiosis, and in specific cell layers. Perturbation of the sRNA pathways yields male sterility and male fertility in dcl5 mutant lines (missing the 24-nt “meiotic” class of phasiRNAs) is restored by specific environmental conditions. Afterwards, he gave detailed answers to questions from the audience that were based on his extensive siRNA experience.
Dr. Meyers had the opportunity to meet old friends and communicate with the group leaders at CEPAMS campus in Beijing. He gave valuable guidance not only to the group leaders but also to early career researchers. His visit strengthened the scientific exchanges between people with CEPAMS and beyond.
