On 18 October, Frances Wood, International Director of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), visited the Beijing Campus of CEPAMS at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), accompanied by Dr. Daniel Brooker, Director of the UKRI in China.
Frances Wood and her colleagues, guided by Dr Xiaofeng Cao, Co-Director of CEPAMS, visited the laboratories and spoke with CEPAMS Group Leaders about their research.
Dr Weicai Wang, IGDB Director, welcomed the delegation, stating that IGDB has recruited seven young PIs under the CEPAMS umbrella, all of whom have done excellent jobs. New research groups have all started smoothly. The Institute, he said, will continue to support the joint centre and looks forward to further cooperation between China and the UK.
Frances Wood said that she was deeply impressed by the laboratory and the cutting-edge research achievements of CEPAMS. The visit, she said, was informative and it was inspiring to see the dedication and motivation of the young people at CEPAMS.
Dr. Daniel Brooker, UKRI China Director, introduced the programme in agriculture and food security between China and the UK. He said that CEPAMS is a high-profile example of a joint centre in plant and microbial sciences funded by UKRI.
The development of CEPAMS was also discussed, along with current opportunities and challenges. The UKRI team suggested specific funding opportunities available to CEPAMS from the UK government. Both sides hope to engage in broader scientific and technological cooperation in the future to jointly address global challenges.
