The Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology (IGDB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in 2001 by a merger of three former institutes of CAS, the Institute of Genetics (founded in 1959), the Institute of Developmental Biology (founded in 1980) and the Shijiazhuang Institute of Agricultural Modernization (founded in 1978). Professor Yongbiao Xue is the current Director-General. It includes 59 research groups. The faculty includes 2 Fellows of CAS and fifty-nine Principal Investigators. The institute has two State key labs, three Minister key labs and one Institute key lab. In addition, the National Plant Gene Research Center (Beijing) is affiliated with the institute.
The institute offer Ph. D and master degrees in Genetics, Developmental Biology, Cell Biology, Ecology and Biological Informatics. It has a staff of 59 senior scientists. Enrolment of students is 528 currently, of whom about 390 are studying for doctorates. This institute provides both excellent research and living conditions for students. All post-graduate students are awarded a good amount of stipends with 16,000 yuan for students pursuing master's degree and 30,000 yuan for doctorate students.
